Pediatric Occupational Therapy Services

Lakeshore Affirmative Therapy offers a new approach for occupational therapy for Autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent children and teens. We are a neurodiversity affirming practice and provide in-home therapy using a strengths based lens. Both the initial OT evaluation and all ongoing therapy sessions will take place in your home! Your occupational therapist will not only work with your child but will also work closely with the parents. Read more below about what to expect at your Initial OT Evaluation and Therapy Sessions.

Pediatric Occupational Therapy Evaluation

An initial occupational therapy evaluation is the first step you take before beginning ongoing occupational therapy treatment sessions. We will begin to identify your child’s unique strengths and challenges. The purpose of the evaluation is learn about your child; not to compare your child to same age peers. At the end of the evaluation we will establish client-centered goals to guide ongoing therapy sessions.

Areas included in our Occupational Therapy Evaluation:

  • sensory profile

  • executive functioning skills

  • current participation in daily activities and routines

  • areas of interest and strengths

  • motor planning and coordination skills

  • identifying preferred methods of learning

  • establishing client-centered goals

Pediatric Occupational Therapy Treatment Sessions

Pediatric occupational therapy sessions will be a collaboration between the therapist and the family. We strongly believe in Parent Coaching. By the end of your OT services you will have a clear understanding of how to best support your child and you will have the knowledge and skills needed to help your child continue to reach their goals. During our therapy sessions we will work together to improve any lagging skills, work to modify the environment to best meet your child’s sensory needs, address any concerns related to interoceptive awareness, and improve their participation in daily activities.

Below are some examples of the occupations an OT could address for pediatric clients:

  • ADL (activities of daily living): toothbrushing, bathing, dressing, toileting, eating or sleeping

  • IADL (instrumental activities of daily living): dentist visits, traveling, eating out at restaurants, household chores

  • Play: expanding attention and regulation during play, forming authentic friendships, participation in solo or group sports, hobbies, playing with siblings

We can also work together to form a plan related to transitions during their daily routines, how to prevent after school meltdowns, and how best to manage challenging behaviors like hitting, spitting, or kicking.

If you have concerns about your child’s Self Regulation or Emotional Regulation.
